The Killers Perform Politically Charged Single “Land of the Free” Live

“Land of the Free” is The Killers recent politically charged single throwing reference to gun violence, the border wall and institutional racism. The band performed the song live for the first time in their hometown Las Vegas, Nevada during Jimmy Kimmel Live April 1. The show usually broadcasts from Los Angeles but is shooting in Vegas this wee. What better way to perform such a heavy hearted song other than in their hometown. Along with “Land of the Free” The Killers also delivered their 2004 hit “All These Things That I’ve Done.”

Singer Brandon Flowers opens the song alone on the piano before a choir came in with a repeated chorus of “land of the free” and the rest of the band joined in. The song hits many popular issues. Toward the end of the performance, Flowers rose from the piano and took center stage to deliver a powerful acappella singing “so how many daughters, tell me how many sons do we have to put in the ground before we just break down and face it?” he queries. “We’ve got a problem with guns.”

The Killers released the Spike-Lee directed video for “Land of the Free” in January which highlighted the struggles and resiliency of real-life migrant families near the U.S./Mexican border. The band is headlining a number of festivals beginning this summer like the U.K.’s Glastonbury in June, Forecastle Festival in Louisville, Kentucky in July, Woodstock 50 in Watkins Glen, New York in August and Nashville, Tennessee’s Pilgrimage Festival in September.
